LUBBOCK, TX -- Tyler Lee Montoya, 23, of Lubbock was arrested Wednesday afternoon, and according to his jail booking sheet the charge against him was failure to register as a sex offender.
It was not clear Wednesday evening if Montoya faced a brand new charge, or his arrest was related to a probation violation. In April of 2013 Lubbock Police arrested Montoya for failure to register as a sex offender. Then in January of this year Montoya pleaded guilty and agreed to serve two years of probation. He was still subject to the conditions of that probation at the time of his arrest on Wednesday.
Montoya’s registration as a sex offender is required by state law because when he was 14 years old, he was convicted of the aggravated sexual assault of an 8-year-old male child. Montoya was released from custody on his 18th birthday with the requirement that he register as a sex offender. The LPD’s online sex offender registry listed Montoya as a “moderate” risk level.
