LUBBOCK, TX -- The man accused of viciously beating a Dairy Queen employee in February was arrested Wednesday, according to the family of one victim. Police later in the day confirmed that Paul Anthony Rodriguez, 18, was charged with aggravated robbery.
Police released surveillance video in the days after the robbery. It showed a man entering the back of the Dairy Queen location at 6925 University Avenue holding a baseball bat. According to police he violently hit a female employee with the bat even though she was complying with his demands for money.
What the video does not show is what happened before the suspect entered the store. Police say he had already violently assaulted Jesse Rios, 34, to the point of nearly killing him.
A police statement in February said the suspect, “savagely beat an innocent Dairy Queen employee almost to death with an aluminum baseball bat.”
Rios suffered potentially life threatening injuries and was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition. According to his family he has been transferred to another facility for rehab treatment and he is doing better.
Robbery Detectives have served robbery warrants on Paul Anthony Rodriguez 07/11/1995 for the aggravated robberies that occurred on February 1, 2014 at 6925 University, Dairy Queen and March 3, 2014 at 4802 50th Street, Whataburger. Rodriguez had been arrested for unrelated charges on April 17, 2014 at 11:15 pm, and was in jail when detectives served the warrants. Detectives were investigating Rodriguez for additional crimes when crime line tips were received that helped link him to the robberies.
