LUBBOCK, TX (NEWS RELEASE) - David D. Perlmutter, the dean of the College of Media & Communication at Texas Tech University, has been elected vice president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) for 2017-18.
With his election as vice president, Perlmutter will ascend the leadership ladder within the organization to become president-elect for 2018-19 and president for the 2019-2020 term.
“I am very honored to serve as vice president of AEJMC next year and president in 2019-2020,” Perlmutter said. “I feel it is an opportunity to serve my discipline and its future. But the election is also a recognition by our peers of the Texas Tech College of Media & Communication’s faculty and programs as premier leaders in research, teaching and public service.”
Perlmutter will begin his new duties as vice president on Oct. 1.
The AEJMC is a nonprofit organization composed of journalism and mass communications educators, students and media professionals that promotes the highest standards of journalism and mass communications education. It cultivates research on a wide scale, encourages a multi-cultural society both in the classroom and curriculum and defends and maintains freedom of communication in order to ensure better professional practices and a better-informed public.
“I am excited to be working with David on our shared vision and ideas about the future of this important organization,” said Marie Hardin, president-elect for 2017-18 and dean of the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State University. “David has been a longtime and active member of AEJMC, and I look forward to seeing the ways our entire membership will benefit from his leadership.”
Perlmutter has served as dean of the College of Media & Communication since July 2013 after serving as a professor and the director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Iowa. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota, and also is a graduate of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication Leadership Workshop.
He has also served as associate dean for graduate studies and research at the University of Kansas and as interim associate dean for graduate studies and research at Louisiana State University.
With a background as a documentary photographer, Perlmutter has authored or edited 10 books on political communication and persuasion. He has written numerous research articles for academic journals and more than 250 essays for newspapers and magazines worldwide, and has been an interview guest for the New York Times, CNN, ABC and The Daily Show.
“We are very pleased by Dean Perlmutter’s election to the leadership of AEJMC,” Texas Tech provost Michael Galyean said. “This honor is a reflection of his own academic credentials and stature in the profession, but it also speaks to the importance of the College of Media & Communication’s academic programs and the quality of scholarship among its faculty.”
