LUBBOCK, TX -- Renee Valencia was sentenced late Monday to life in prison for the 2010 shooting death of Zachary Matta, 22, outside the Daiquiri Lounge in 2200 block of Buddy Holly Avenue. The Daiquiri Lounge has since been shut down.

A Lubbock police officer heard shots and cashed Valencia, but he was able to get into a pickup truck and drive off. Before getting away Valencia fired his gun at Officer Jennifer Pierce, police said at the time. Officers found and stopped Valencia a short time later at 32nd and Avenue N.

On Friday a jury found Valencia guilty. Numerous witnesses testified that Valencia was the shooter. The same jury then decided Monday that Valencia should get life in prison.
