We hear a lot about people getting hit by cars along Avenue Q, here in Lubbock. Some folks, even get killed.

TxDOT has construction plans, they say would make the area safer, but not everyone agrees with them.

Councilman Victor Hernandez sent out a statement this morning saying that TxDOT has been awarded $600,000 to construct medians down Avenue Q for 200 feet,  from 19th to 50th street.

Hernandez says while he appreciates them trying to improve safety, he hopes to focus on more holistic measures for the safety project- like reducing speed limits, increasing street lights and using those medians at key crossing locations.

But, Hernandez says this all must be done quickly. If TxDOT turns Avenue Q back to the City of Lubbock, they lose all the funds.

Hernandez hopes to work with TxDOT to find a solution with a positive impact on neighboring residents and businesses.

Hernandez tells us that he and Councilman Price are meeting with TxDOT Friday morning to provide input... and he hopes to hold a town hall meeting about this in the near future.
