FLORESVILLE, Texas (Nexstar) - Hundreds of people filled the stands at Floresville ISD’s football field Wednesday evening for a vigil to honor the victims of the Sutherland Springs church shooting.
Eric Thomas, who has lived in La Vernia since 1987, knows how small towns can come together after tragedy. He attended the vigil to pay his respects to the families affected by the shooting, which includes a son of a friend who was shot.
“We’re a tight knit community and good country people that take care of each other and I know we’ll pull through it,” he said.
Robin Stine, who has lived in Floresville for 20 years, knew the Holcombe family. Eight members of the Holcombe family died Sunday – ranging three generations. Stine says it is a day that sticks in her mind.
“It was a tragedy,” she said. “When it happened Sunday, my husband and I were coming back from a trip.”
Stine said she and her husband both drove by the good Samaritans who chased after the suspect.
“We came up to where the church was and I just told my husband, I knew something had happened,” she said.
Stine’s family has known the Holcombe family for two decades.
“Their children went to school with my kids,” she said. “And Bryan and Karla were just pillars of the community.”
Stine says she hopes by attending the vigil, the community can be slowly lifted up during this tough time.
“I pray to God that for the victims’ families that eventually they find comfort that something like this doesn’t ever happen again,” she said.
Vice President Mike Pence, alongside state and federal lawmakers, gave a speech focused on faith and prayer.
“We’ll never be shaken as long as we build our fortress on the rock of God,” Pence said. “God bless you all, God bless Texas and may God forever be with the communities and families affected by this tragedy.”
Governor Greg Abbott also issued a proclamation to make Sunday, Nov. 12, a day of prayer for across Texas.
