ABILENE, TX -- Abilene Police said a woman was shot and killed, and a baby was injured by gunfire late Wednesday night. Police were called to an Abilene apartment complex after a 911 call for domestic violence.

In a statement police said, “As the responding officers attempted to make contact with the residents, they heard two gunshots come from inside the apartment.”

Makayla Bunting, 22, was found dead with a gunshot to the head. Chevayae Johnson, 23, appeared to be dead after a gunshot to the head. Officers were surprised to learn he was very much alive.

Police said, “As the officers were exiting the apartment with the children, Mr. Johnson regained consciousness and came outside after the officers.”

Police had a physical confrontation with Johnson and had to use Tasers to get him into custody.

Before Johnson regained consciousness officers recovered two children – one of them 4-years-old and the other 2-weeks-old. The younger child is recovering from a gunshot wound to the hand.

Police said, “Bunting was holding her 2-week old infant when she was shot, and the child was removed from her arms by responding officers.”

Johnson was taken to Hendrick Medical Center in critical condition. If he survives what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, then he will be charged for the death of Bunting and the injury of her baby.
