BOWIE, TX -- Investigators have released a preliminary report in a deadly plane crash that killed a father and his young son near Bowie earlier this month.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the crash happened just before 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 15.

The report states the twin-engine Cessna had departed from La Porte Municipal Airport near Houston around 2 p.m. and was headed to Bowie Municipal Airport.

The NTSB says a witness saw the plane suddenly point straight down, begin spinning and made three full rotations before hitting the ground.

The report states evidence at the scene showed the plane hit the ground nose down and burst into flames.

The pilot, 51-year-old Lawrence Liptack of Manvel, near Houston and his son, 10-year- old Landon, were both killed.
