Roswell Police Release Video of Deadly Police Shooting

ROSELL, NM - On Wednesday afternoon, Roswell Police released video of a deadly officer-involved shooting.   Police publicly identified the man who was shot and killed as Shayne Romero, 30, of Peralta, New Mexico.

WARNING: the video is graphic and clearly shows the moment when an officer fires at Romero. The video also contains explicit language.

Police released “video of the incident from the lapel-cam of the officer who exchanged gunfire with the suspect.”

It happened around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday when a Roswell police officer was checking on a stolen vehicle at a Roswell motel.

Officials said Romero told the officer that he owned the vehicle but then tried to run away.  Police said when the officer tried to pursue him, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the officer.

Roswell police said the officer returned fire, hitting the suspect in the leg and shoulder.  After the suspect was injured, another officer told the suspect to give up his gun, but the suspect instead turned the gun on himself.

Police said no officers were injured.  Two officers were placed on administrative leave.
