“This move makes great business sense,” said Robert Taylor, president of The United Family®. “With our Lubbock-based distribution center within 200 miles of these cities, we can serve these four stores more efficiently and most effectively, which translates into greater quality on the shelves for our guests.”
All four stores will retain their Albertsons identity and will operate under the Albertsons Market name. Store management at all locations will remain the same, and no team members will lose their jobs as a result of the strategic shift. Taylor and Bob Miller, CEO of Albertson’s LLC, have been working to identify ways United and Albertsons can work together to bring about positive benefits to stores and their guests.
“We want to preserve the teams in all of these locations and continue to operate them as Albertsons stores,” Taylor said. “These stores are all high-volume, well-operated stores. Our goal is to maintain their positive performance and, as is true for all of our stores, look for ways to grow that production in the future.”
The announcement follows a similar one made two months ago when eight West Texas Albertsons locations in Abilene, Midland, Odessa and San Angelo transitioned to The United Family. “This is another move to strengthen our company by taking advantage of existing synergies to help position these stores for continued success,” Taylor said.
Founded in 1916, The United Family® had been a family-owned supermarket chain until becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of Albertson’s LLC in a transaction that became official Dec. 27, 2013. A self-distributing company with its headquarters in Lubbock and distribution centers in Lubbock and Roanoke, United currently operates 68 stores under four unique brands: United Supermarkets, Albertsons Market, Market Street, Amigos and United Express, along with ancillary operations R.C. Taylor Distributing, Praters and Llano Logistics. The company employs more than 13,000 team members.
