Get Ready to “Dive In” to great Family Fun this Spring...

Penguin Plunge!

March 1st through June 15th, 2014

at the Science Spectrum & OMNI Theater.

A first for Lubbock! - Penguin Plunge! is an immersive experience that combines a live penguin habitat, hands-on interactives, environmental education, and an amazing photographic exhibition.

In the Penguin Habitat:

Meet a loveable "waddle" or group of African Rock Penguins up close and personal.  During this once-in-a-lifetime experience, you’ll be able to view these special creatures both on land and in the water. The penguins live, eat, sleep, swim and play in their state-of-the-art 2500 gallon habitat that is temperature and humidity controlled just to their liking.

Animal care takers and educators will be giving special daily presentations on penguins,

covering topics like what a penguin eats and how they avoid predators, to how they raise their young and communicate with each other.

Interactive Areas:

After meeting these adorable creatures, head on over to other exhibit areas for some hands-on fun! See how you measure up against penguins from around the world or practice carrying eggs on your feet. Try out a hands-on experiment or craft at the Pebble Play Place and round out the visit learning about penguins' habitats and how we can help protect and preserve these precious animals.

Photographic Exhibit:

Cold Feet - Photographs by J.J. L’Heureux

Except for the sounds of the rookeries, the expansion and contraction of the ice, and the howl of the wind, Antarctica is very much like the soundless photographs presented in this exhibition.

Traveling along the ice shelves from Atka Bay to Halley Station, painter, naturalist and photographer J.J. L’Heureux turns her camera to the penguins and their adaptations to the cold and wind of this continent.

Sixty stunning photographs from her personal expeditions to Antarctica will be displayed.

While you’re here, you’ll also be able to take in the full penguin experience by seeing  the all new OMNI film, Penguins.

A Tale of Love and Survival in Penguin City.

Narrated by David Attenborough, Penguins celebrates the destiny of a very special King Penguin, who returns to his birthplace in the sub-Antarctic. Known as Penguin City, the island is home to hundreds of albatrosses, fur seals and brawling elephant seals—as well as six million penguins! Somehow our hero must earn his place among the island inhabitants and fulfill his destiny by finding a mate and raising a family.

What follows is the story of the most challenging time in a King Penguin’s life, when he is driven to nurture and defend his offspring against harsh weather and fierce predators. This cosmic drama plays out in one of Earth’s last great wildernesses, amid steep mountain ranges and windblown plains half buried beneath snow and ice. Penguins is an unforgettable tale of one King Penguin’s journey through his species’ central rite of passage.

Penguins is a presentation of nWave Pictures Distribution and Serengeti Entertainment. Written and narrated by David Attenborough, the film is produced by Anthony Geffen and Sias Wilson and features cinematography by Simon Niblett and original music by James Edward Barker. The film was entirely filmed on location in South Georgia Island, a British overseas territory located in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

The film is recommended for General Audiences. For more information on Penguins visit the film’s website at  The OMNI Theater will be showing the 2D version of this film.
