LUBBOCK, TX -- The Lubbock County Republican Party will host a debate for District 19 Congressional candidates in the March 4 Republican Primary. The local Republicans said candidates Donald May and Chris Winn agreed to appear at the town-hall style debate. Incumbent Congressman Randy Neugebauer will not appear in-person.

A written statement from the LRCP said, “Incumbent, Congressman Randy Neugebauer’s campaign will be represented with brief remarks by staffer Mitch Barnett, while candidates Donald May and Chris Winn will appear personally and participate in an extended debate format.”

The debate is scheduled for Monday, February 17th at Vintage Township Town Hall, 12002 Trafalgar, 7:00 p.m.

Winn took the airwaves of AM 790 KFYO Friday morning with talk show host Chad Hasty to complain about Neugebauer’s absence.

Winn said, “I think it’s insulting to the people of this community to think that the person who’s been elected for 12 years has decided not to debate challengers to his position.”

Hasty responded on the radio show by saying, “That’s not really a debate then. It’s a debate between you and Don May, but that’s about it.”

Through a spokesperson Congressman Neugebauer said he is “spending the week in the district, just like every other week - speaking at events and meeting with constituents.” Neugebauer said on Tuesday he will be in Abilene and Breckenridge.

“It would be much more fun if the incumbent were there,” said LCRP Chairman Carl Tepper.

“This has become commonplace in politics. The leading candidate who has a comfortable lead chooses not to participate because it would jeopardize that lead.”
