“Thank you for making this day a reality,” Abbott said in his acceptance speech. He thanked Republicans voters for choosing him to run for governor of “the greatest state in our nation.”
“I’m ready to fight for you and all hardworking Texans,” said Davis. “Now is the time to fight for our future.”
With more than two-thirds of statewide results available the Republican race for Texas Attorney General looked like it might be headed for a runoff. Ken Paxton had 44% of the vote; Dan Branch had 33% and Barry Smitherman had 22%.
The Democratic race for Texas Ag Commissioner looked like it might also be headed for a runoff with Jim Hogan, Kinky Friendman and Hugh Asa Fitzsimmons all getting less than the 50% threshold needed for an outright victory.
It was same story with Republican race for Texas Ag Commissioner. The likely runoff contenders were Sid Miller and Tommy Merritt.
The Republican race for Comptroller was close to avoiding a runoff. As of 11:00 pm with more than two-thirds of the results available, Glen Hagar had 50% in a four-way race. Harvey Hilderbran would be the likely runoff opponent for Hagar if his vote total goes to less than 50%.
Dan Patrick and David Dewherst are likely to have a runoff race on the Republican side for Lieutenant Governor. With more than two-thirds of statewide results available, Patrick and incumbent Lt. Governor, David Dewhurst were the top two. But neither was close to breaking the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff.
U.S. Senator John Cornyn was winning the Republican Primary comfortably with 61% in his effort to get re-elected.
In the Democratic race for U.S. Senator David Alameel had 48% of the vote with more than two-thirds of statewide results available. If he cannot avoid a runoff, his likely opponent would be Kesha Rogers.
The runoff election date is Tuesday, May 27.
