Aucoin Named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for Second Time
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore Gretchen Aucoin was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season Tuesday afternoon following her three-hit shutout of Kansas last weekend.
Aucoin, who also received the honor on March 26, picked up the win in the circle in all three games of the Kansas series. The three-game sweep of the Jayhawks was the first ever for the Red Raiders over a Big 12 opponent on the road.
This is the third time this season where a Red Raider has earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors, which is the most for the Tech pitching staff in school history. Brittany Talley also earned the accolade on Feb. 11 following the opening weekend of the season.
Aucoin highlighted Tech’s sweep of Kansas with her three-hit shutout in Saturday’s series finale. It was the second complete game shutout of Aucoin’s career and her first that went a full seven innings.
The Ocean Springs, Miss. native struck out seven while allowing just four Jayhawks to reach base. Aucoin wrapped the performance by retiring 12 of the final 13 batters face as Tech recorded its first 1-0 victory since defeating UC Davis on May 22, 2010, against UC Davis.
Aucoin previously tossed 4.1 innings in Tech’s 7-5 series opening victory and 2.1 innings of relief Friday when the Red Raiders scored a 9-7 extra-inning win. The impressive weekend improved the right-hander to 12-7 on the year with a 2.17 ERA.
She also boosted Tech at the plate Friday with a three-run homer in the opening inning and then a RBI single that was part of a five-run ninth for the Red Raiders. Her four RBI matched her career high set earlier this year against Texas State.
The three-game sweep marked Tech’s fourth-straight victory in Big 12 play, its longest winning streak against conference foes since late in the 2010 season.
The Red Raiders will look to extend that streak this weekend when Iowa State travels to Lubbock for a three-game series at Rocky Johnson Field. The series gets underway with a 7 p.m. first pitch Friday evening.
