Burleson Named Academic All-Big 12 First Team
LUBBOCK, Texas(Texas Tech Press) – Texas Tech junior second baseman Bryant Burleson (Midland, Texas) was named Academic All-Big 12 First Team while sophomore outfielder Zach Davis (Houston, Texas) and sophomore right-handed pitcher Johnathon Tripp (Spring, Texas) were each named to the second team, the league office announced Thursday.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The first team is comprised of 43 honorees, while 22 student-athletes make up the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Burleson (Accounting) was named to the first team for the second straight season. He is the first Red Raider since 2008-09 (Brian Cloud) to earn first team recognition in back-to-back seasons.
“Bryant is a leader for us on the field and in the classroom,” head coach Tim Tadlock said. “Obviously we are very proud of what he has accomplished as a student-athlete at Tech. Zach and Johnathon also worked hard and had a great semester in the classroom.”
Now in his third season as a starter for the Red Raiders, Burleson is having his finest season at Tech batting .287 (58-for-202) with 32 runs, 17 doubles, two triples, a home run and 33 RBI. Burleson has played in 154 career games at Tech (141 starts) with 41 doubles, 83 RBI and owns a career .974 fielding percentage – the best by a Red Raider second baseman in over 13 years.
In addition, Burleson’s spring semester marks his sixth consecutive semester to post a 3.0 grade point average.
Davis (Exercise and Sports Science/Biology Minor) earned his first Academic All-Big 12 honor a year after being named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team.
Davis has played in 37 games this season batting .357 (10-for-28) with 15 runs scored and leads the team with six stolen bases on six attempts. Davis has been one of Tech’s top defensive replacements and pinch runners this season.
This semester marks Davis’ third time during his four semesters at Tech to post a 3.0 GPA.
Tripp (Sociology/Forensic Science Minor) also earned his first Academic All-Big 12 honor while receiving Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors in 2013 during his freshman season.
Tripp has appeared in 11 games this season (3 starts) with a 0-1 record, 3.22 ERA and has pitched 22.1 innings with one save. Tripp has 15 strikeouts and has allowed just five walks this season.
This semester marks Tripp’s third time to have a 3.0 GPA during his four semesters as a Red Raider.
