LUBBOCK, Texas (February 15, 2014) – Joel Lutz connected on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to complete a 10-9 upset victory by Lubbock Christian University over No.22 Angelo State University Saturday at Hays Field.
Lutz's homer was his third of the season and the hit over the left field wall capped a comeback win for the Chaps. The Chaps third baseman had the last two runs-batted-in for LCU. He tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single and then provided the extra inning heroics with two outs.
LCU had to come back for the win, but they had the lead through much of the game. After the Rams produced three hits in the second inning and took a 2-0 lead, the Chaps responded with a four-run third inning. Brett Kauten opened the scoring in the inning with a double and Wigberto Nevarez's two-run single with two outs provided LCU a 4-2 lead. Jesse Pintado and Brandon Wilson produced back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning and LCU extended the lead to 6-2. ASU stormed back with a four-run fifth inning to tie the game 6-6. Christian Summers scored three of the runs for ASU with a three-run home run. LCU grabbed the lead back in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs, started off with a lead-off homer by Nevarez. The Rams regained the lead with a run in the sixth inning followed by a pair of Chap errors in the eighth inning leading to a 9-8 advantage.
Nevarez and Lutz each had a trio of hits and three RBI. LCU had a 16-11 advantage in hits. Summers was 2-for-5 with three RBI in the losing cause for the Rams. Dalton Silva earned the win in relief for LCU, as he pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings. Brig Gerlich started for LCU and allowed seven runs over six innings. ASU's Dillon Becker suffered the loss. He was the fifth pitcher used by the Rams, who did not have any pitcher last more than three innings on the mound.
The win evened the three-game series and improves LCU's record to 4-4. It was ASU's first loss of the season (6-1). The Chaps close out the series with a 2 p.m. rubber match at Hays Field Sunday.
