MIDLAND, Texas – Freshman left-handed pitcher Dylan Dusek allowed two runs in 6.1 innings and sophomore first baseman Eric Gutierrez hit a game-winning, three-run home run in the fifth inning to give No. 25 Texas Tech to a 6-3 victory over New Mexico on a neutral field in front of 5,169 fans at Security Bank Ballpark Tuesday evening.
Texas Tech (23-9) improved to 8-1 in midweek games this season while claiming its second win this year over the Lobos, who fell to 19-10-1 on the campaign.
Dusek (4-0) retired the side in order in three of his six innings pitched while allowing just two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts without allowing a walk for the fifth time in six starts this season. In addition, Dusek became the first Red Raider freshman to start his career 4-0 since 2011 (Duke von Schamann).
Junior right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno threw 18 pitches in 1.2 innings in relief with two strikeouts and freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley tied a freshman school record with his third save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Lobos reliever Tyler Gibson (0-1) took the loss allowing the home run to Gutierrez and allowing two hits and two walks in one inning of work.
Tech took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on sophomore third baseman Alec Humphreys’ bases-loaded walk in the third inning.
UNM answered immediately with two runs in the fourth while back-to-back base hits (single, double) started the Lobo half of the fourth and both base runners came around to score.
With two base runners on in the fifth inning and the game tied at 2-2, Gutierrez hit a towering home run over the left-field wall into the home bullpen on a 3-0 pitch. It was Gutierrez’ team-leading fourth home run of the season and the 11th of his two-year Tech career.
Both teams scored runs in the eighth, despite Tech pitchers combining to retire 15-of-19 Lobos from the final out in the fourth inning to the final out of the game in the ninth.
Junior shortstop Tim Proudfoot scored three runs and went 2-for-4 and freshman outfielder Stephen Smith reached base safely in 3-of-4 plate appearances with three walks.
The Red Raiders will continue their road trip this weekend traveling to No. 20 Oklahoma State for a three-game Big 12 series, Apr. 4-6, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater.
