LUBBOCK, Texas (Texas Tech Pres Release) – Senior Red Raider distance runner Kennedy Kithuka has officially made his second-straight appearance on the 2014 Bowerman Trophy Watch List as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association today.
The Texas Tech distance runner who swept the 5,000 and 10,000-meter conference championships in dominant fashion last weekend was among 10 individual athletes named to the Post-Conference edition of the Watch List. Kithuka is one of three Big 12 athletes included on the list.
“It’s a great honor for Kennedy and recognition of his continued excellence in distance running.” Texas Tech distance coach Jon Murray said.
The Bowerman Trophy, awarded annually since 2009, recognizes the top male and female athlete in collegiate track and field.
Kithuka won the Big 12 10,000-meter crown Friday night with a meet record time of 28 minutes 48.04 seconds after lapping the field and finishing 1 minute 21 seconds ahead of second place. He went on to break a 31-year-old facility record in the 5,000-meters Sunday helping to push the No. 5 Red Raiders to their second Big 12 Championship in program history.
The Thika, Kenya native holds the nation’s leading time in the 5,000-meters with a season-best of 13:26.98 clocked at the Mt. SAC Relays in April, and the No. 2 time in the 10,000-meters with a season-best time of 27:41.73 – both times are Texas Tech school records.
Kithuka is now a six-time Big 12 Champion between cross country and track and field.
