LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 53 Texas Tech grabbed a 4-2 victory over Rice at Falls Athletic Club on Sunday.
Both teams woke up to the ever-changing Lubbock weather conditions. Due to more than two inches of snow, the match moved inside.
The below-freezing temperatures did not throw the Red Raiders off their game, as Maxime Hinnisdaels set the tone for the match with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win over David Warren.
Following closely, Felipe Soares added a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Sirkar Alla at No. 1 to extend the Red Raider lead to 2-0 overall.
Adam Gustafsson fought back for Rice defeating Johann Willems, 6-5 (7-4), 6-3.
In the turning point of the match, Hugo Dojas battled to a tie-breaking triumph over Tommy Bennett, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Francisco Zambon had five match points before he finally secured the overall Texas Tech win after defeating Gustavo Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-3.
Rice’s Zach Yablon’s win over Jolan Cailleau, 6-5 (7-5), 6-1, closed out the scoring.
The Red Raiders will travel to Coral Gables, Fla., on Friday to take on Miami and South Florida. Tech will face No. 60 Miami on Friday at noon, before taking on No. 74 USF on Saturday at noon.
