Red Raider Golf Claims Tournament Title
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Men’s Golf team claimed its first tournament title in two years as the Red Raiders posted a 13-stroke victory at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. Junior Clement Sordet claimed the individual medalist honor at 2-under, 208.
The tournament title is the first for the program since taking home the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational back on Feb. 14, 2012, and is the 16th tournament title under head coach Greg Sands. For Sordet, it marked his first individual championship in a stroke play tournament.
To secure the tournament title, the Red Raiders had to battle through rain and snow as a winter storm system moved through Virginia. Tech entered today’s final round with an 8-stroke lead over Eastern Michigan.
Despite the adverse weather conditions, Texas Tech carded a team score of 5-over, 280 to seal a 13-stroke win over No. 48 UNC-Greensboro. UNC-Greensboro overcame Eastern Michigan in the final round as the Eagles fell from second place to seventh with a 25-over, 305.
Sordet was able to claim medalist honors by shooting even par in the final round that brought him to 2-under, 208 for the tournament. He is the first Red Raider to claim an individual tournament title this season.
Junior Matias Dominguez was right on the heels of Sordet as he finished one stroke back (1-under, 209) in second place. For Dominguez, it marked the best tournament finish of his three-year career at Texas Tech.
Junior Esteban Restrepo earned his second top 10 finish of the season as he ended up tied for eighth (4-over, 214) with Matt Oshrine of Loyola Univ.-Maryland.
The Red Raiders have just one more regular-season tournament before the Big 12 Conference Championships get underway in late April. Tech will tee off in the Aggie Invitational in College Station, April 5-6.
