LUBBOCK, Texas (Texas Tech Press Release) – Texas Tech sophomore Felipe Soares has been named All-Big 12 in singles, announced league officials on Tuesday.
“I am proud of Felipe. He is very deserving of this award,” said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. “He was the MVP of our team and did a great job at No. 1 all season. I think that Hugo (Dojas) was deserving as well. Those two were much improved from last season.”
Soares, a native of Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, is currently ranked No. 60 nationally in the ITA Top 125 singles rankings. He is 22-10 on the season and 14-8 in dual matches from the No. 1 position.
Soares, who is 7-8 against ranked players this season, has been named the second alternate for the 2014 NCAA Singles Championships.
He is the first Red Raider to earn the honor since All-Americans Raony Carvahlo and Gonzalo Escobar were named All-Big 12 in 2012. In all, Soares is the 11th Red Raider to win a total of 20 all-league honors.
Soares and the Red Raiders will begin play in the 2014 NCAA Championships on Saturday, when the No. 41 Red Raiders face No. 17 California at the Mitchell Tennis Center at 9 a.m. It is the 13th all-time NCAA appearance for the Red Raiders in the Championships.
