Tech Baseball Rides Pitching into two Top 30 Polls

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech won three of four games over the weekend against third-ranked Indiana and is now starting the week in two national top-30 polls as National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball have ranked the Red Raiders 28th and 30th, respectively.


It marks Tech’s first national ranking since Mar. 12, 2012, when the Red Raiders received a No. 27 ranking by Collegiate Baseball. Tech was ranked three times during the 2012 season – its highest by Collegiate Baseball at No. 24 on Feb. 27.


The Red Raiders break into the NCBWA poll for the first time since Mar. 21, 2005, when Tech was tabbed 25th in the country.


The Red Raiders won the final three games of the series against Indiana this past weekend with a 10-5 game two win, 6-2 victory in game three and a 7-0 shutout in the series finale on Sunday.


The Texas Tech pitching staff tallied a 1.25 ERA in 36 innings of work while seven of the nine pitchers who saw action have an ERA below 2.00.


The Red Raiders were led by numerous players at the plate during their opening weekend, including sophomore infielder/outfielder Eric Gutierrez (.500, .647 OB%), sophomore outfielder Tyler Neslony (.444, HR, 6 RBI, 1.111 SLG%), junior shortstop Tim Proudfoot (.467, 3 RBI, 1.000 fielding %) and junior second baseman Bryant Burleson (.400, 4 2B, .667 SLG%) to name a few.


The Red Raiders will host Oral Roberts this weekend, Feb. 21-23, for the Brooks Wallace Memorial Series at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
