Texas Tech Cross Country Begins 2014 Season in Ruidoso
LUBBOCK, Texas (Texas Tech Press Release) – The Red Raider and Lady Raider cross country teams will begin the 2014 season Friday, as the two squads compete at the Texas Tech--UTEP--New Mexico State Triangular, in Ruidoso, N.M.
The competition will begin at 5 p.m., CST, with the women's race, followed by the men's race. The races will be scored as a double dual.
"Our meet in Ruidoso is an excellent opportunity to combine an early low-key competition with a great place to train," head coach Jon Murray said. "The team is looking forward to the beautiful surroundings and cool weather. It will give us a great indication of what our starting point is for this season."
This race will be the first for the Red Raiders without former Tech superstar Kennedy Kithuka, but the men's squad has plenty of young talent eager to prove itself in competition.
"New Mexico State and UTEP will provide a measuring stick to see where we are in our conditioning," Murray said. "The training in Ruidoso we are able to do after the competition will continue what we have been doing so far."
The Lady Raiders will be led by senior Sharlene Nickle, who finished 13th at the 2013 Big 12 Championships, with a season-best time of 21:07. Nickle earned All-Big 12 honors with the performance.
For fans interested in attending, the race will be held on the fitness trail behind the U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station on the corner of Mechem Drive and Cedar Creek Road. A map of the course can be found here.
Texas Tech will host its lone home meet of the 2014 season, the Red Raider Open on Friday, Sept. 12.
