The Dallas Cowboys solidified one of their most important positions giving left tackle Tyron Smith an eight year extension making his contract 10 years worth about $110 million.
Smith is under the Cowboys control until 2023 and of the $110 million, $40 million is guaranteed, making that the most for any left tackle in the league. Smith has proved he is worth it, as last year he allowed just one sack and was called for holding just one time. Head Coach Jason Garrett knows how important he is to the franchise.
"We talked about building a program and building a football team and he was the first person we took three years ago in that draft," said Garrett, "And he's just been everything we wanted to build this program and this team around. He was a really young player that we put in really on minute one of day one. He's everything we thought he would be, both physically and tangibly and just as a person. His work ethic is fantastic his mental and physical toughness is as good as i've been around. He just continues to develop and grow as a player."
So, while there is good news along the offensive line, the defensive line took a hit yesterday as rookie second round pick Demarcus Lawrence went down with a broken foot and will miss 8-12 weeks. Coach Garrett has been impressed with Lawrence’s production so far in camp and expects him to make an impact when he returns.
"Demarcus hurt his foot, without going into specifics he has a fracture in one of the bones in his foot," said Garrett. "He's going to be out from what we think is 8 to 12 weeks was the initial diagnosis, he's going to have to go back to dallas and have surgery on it. He's going to rehab as quickly as he can and we're going to assess him as he goes. He was off to a good start in training camp and there's still a lot of football left after 8 to 12 weeks into the season so we anticipate him to be back and ready to go for us at some point."
