Webb Tabbed to Davey O'Brien Award Watch List
LUBBOCK, Texas (Texas Tech Press Release) – Texas Tech sophomore quarterback Davis Webb will enter his second season leading the Red Raider offense as one of 39 preseason candidates for the Davey O’Brien Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate quarterback.
Webb joins a large group of former Red Raider quarterbacks named to the watch list by the Davey O’Brien Foundation, including Seth Doege, Taylor Potts, Graham Harrell and his current head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
One of seven sophomores named to the watch list, Webb was joined as a preseason candidate by fellow Big 12 quarterbacks Trevor Knight (Oklahoma), Bryce Petty (Baylor), J.W. Walsh (Oklahoma State) and Jake Waters (Kansas State).
Webb was among the nation’s top passers as only a freshman a year ago, totaling 2,718 yards and 20 touchdowns through the year. He broke seven Big 12 Conference freshman records, including 400-yard passing performances, passing yards in a single game and passing touchdowns in a season.
He closed the season leading the Red Raiders to a 37-23 victory over No. 14 Arizona State at the Holiday Bowl, earning Offensive MVP honors after going 28-of-41 with 403 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
This is the second preseason accolade already this summer for Webb, who was previously named to the Maxwell Award watch list.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation will trim the watch list to 16 semifinalists on Nov. 3 before naming three finalists three weeks later on Nov. 24. The 2014 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will air Dec. 11 on ESPN.
The 38th annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner will be held Feb. 16, 2015, in Fort Worth, Texas.
