LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 24 Texas Tech was led by sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Withrow who struck out a career-high 10 batters in seven shutout innings guiding the Red Raiders to a 2-0, one-hit shutout over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Red Raiders (20-7) were led by third baseman Jake Barrios (2-for-4) and first baseman Eric Gutierrez (2-for-4) at the plate as both players drove in Tech’s only runs in the third and seventh inning, respectively.

Withrow (3-1) and reliever Dalton Brown combined on the one-hitter while striking out 13 batters – the most by the Red Raiders this season. Withrow allowed the only hit of the game on an infield bloop single in the sixth inning. He allowed two walks to go along with his 10 strikeouts.

It marked Tech’s first combined one-hit shutout since Duke von Schamann and Trey Masek combined to one-hit No. 31 Missouri State on Opening Day in 2012 at Rip Griffin Park.

Brown pitched two perfect frames while posting three strikeouts as the Golden Lions weren’t able to get the ball out of the infield on the sophomore right-handed pitcher.

UAPB starting pitcher Jim Ploeger (2-2) took the loss allowing one run on three hits in 2.2 innings with two strikeouts and two walks allowed.

Tech broke a scoreless tie on Barrios’ two-out, RBI single to center field scoring Bryant Burleson in the third inning. Burleson remained hot at the plate going 2-for-3 with a walk and stolen base in the game.

Gutierrez gave Tech an insurance run in the seventh with another two-out RBI with a single up the middle to score catcher Tyler Floyd who led off the frame with a hit-by-pitch.

The contest lasted only one hour and 58 minutes – which is tied for the second fastest played game by the Red Raiders this season.
