LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior Rachel Brummitt was selected Tuesday to join the U.S. Collegiate National Team that will train and compete in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships held June 22-July 1 in Minneapolis, Minn.
Brummitt, a native of Plano, Texas, is the second Red Raider named to one of USA Volleyball’s three collegiate national teams, joining fellow senior Breeann David who will be traveling this summer as part of the program’s European Tour.
One of six liberos selected to the squad, Brummitt earned the invite after participating alongside David at the U.S. Women’s National Team open tryouts held in late February at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“I’m really excited and looking forward to playing on a USA Volleyball team,” Brummitt said. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity, and I think this will help me grow and continue to improve as I head into my senior season at Texas Tech.”
Following four days of training, Brummitt and the 35 other athletes selected will be divided into three equal teams that will compete in a round-robin event June 26-30. The entire trip is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Since arriving at Tech as a sophomore transfer in 2012, Brummitt has single-handily rewrote the Tech defensive record book, breaking the program’s single-season mark for digs in each of her two seasons.
Brummitt recorded a team-high 604 digs as a junior in 2013, surpassing her own school record from the year before by nearly 100 digs alone. She averaged 5.16 digs per set en route to earning All-Big 12 second team honors as well as AVCA honorable mention All-American accolades.
Brummitt enters her 2014 senior season needing 469 digs to snap the Tech career record of 1,583 that was set by Lisa Hilgers from 1995-98. She is the only player in school history to join the 1,000 career digs club in just two seasons.
