LUBBOCK, Texas Texas Tech senior distance runner Kennedy Kithuka has been named the Big 12 Men’s Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
The honor comes after Kithuka’s dominant performance in the 5,000-meter run at the 56th Mt. SAC Relays last week where he took down a seven-year-old school record while clocking the NCAA’s fastest time of the season at 13 minutes 26.98 seconds. The Thika, Kenya native broke the previous school record by 14 seconds, and also climbed to No. 2 on the current IAAF World Rankings.
Kithuka finished runner-up at the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships after winning the NCAA title in the 5,000-meter run during the 2013 indoor season. He has been named Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week three times in his career, while being named the league’s Cross Country Runner of the Week seven times in two seasons.
Furthermore, the Red Raider now owns four Texas Tech track and field records.
Two Texas Tech athletes have now earned weekly honors from the Big 12 as sophomore hurdler Le’Tristan Pledger earned the season’s first on March 26.
Texas Tech will open competition Thursday at the 120th Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
