Neslony Named to Breakout Player of the Year Award Watch List
LUBBOCK, Texas (Texas Tech Press Release) – Texas Tech sophomore outfielder Tyler Neslony (Corpus Christi, Texas) has been named to the Gregg Olson Award Watch List, a national honor to recognize college baseball’s “Breakout Player of the Year.”
Neslony is the only player from the Big 12 Conference on the list and is one of 80 players in the country to be selected to the watch list. In fact, Neslony is one of just 13 outfielders in the country that were selected.
One of the top hitters in the Big 12 this season, Neslony is batting .396 (44-for-111) in 32 games (30 starts) with 25 runs, 11 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 28 RBI with a .676 slugging percentage and .477 on-base percentage this season.
He began his collegiate career at Tech in 2013 as a freshman batting .227 (10-for-44) in 20 games (10 starts) with four doubles and seven RBI.
Neslony is the second Red Raider to make the award’s watch list as last season right-handed pitcher Trey Masek was selected during the award’s first season. In fact, Neslony and Masek are two of only three Big 12 Conference players to make the list the past two seasons joining K-State’s Austin Fisher, who was also named to the list last season.
The award, presented by Toolshed Sports, is named after former Auburn star pitcher Gregg Olson, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All-American, first-round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and Major League Baseball All-Star. Like Olson, these players have elevated their game to an elite level and in many instances their team has mirrored their success as a direct result.
Semifinalists will be named Friday, May 30, at the start of NCAA Regional play and the finalists are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6 at the beginning of Super Regional action.
The winner of the 2014 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series which is to be held this season at TD Ameritrade Park from June 14-June 25.
