HOUSTON The Red Raider soccer team suffered its first loss of the spring season Saturday falling 7-0 to the Houston Dash at the Houston Sports Complex.
Tech entered the match following a 3-0 shutout of West Texas A&M while the Houston Dash, a 2014 expansion team of the National Women's Soccer League, moved to 2-1 in its preseason with victories over Rice and Texas A&M.
The Red Raiders and Dash battled back-and-forth in the opening 30 minutes of play as Lauren Watson was able to make several key saves. Meanwhile, Janine Beckie narrowly missed giving Tech the lead early after unleashing  a powerful shot that just missed the back of the net in the opening minutes.
"I thought early on we did quite well," Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "Janine had a great look in the opening minute. I thought as the game went on the Dash got better and better. Their ball movement was excellent and they were lethal in the final third at times."
Beckie and Briana Rohmer proved to be a handful for Houston's defenders throughout the first half, while Caity Heap also had a great scoring chance in the second half - a shot that went just wide of the net.
Texas Tech, which won a school record 18 matches in 2013, continues its spring schedule with a match against Big 12 foe Baylor set for April 5 in Dallas.
"It was an excellent opportunity to challenge ourselves and get a real look at what it takes to play the next level," Stone said. "Some players handled the pace of the game better than others but overall is real good chance for us to grow."
