LUBBOCK, Texas – Gretchen Aucoin connected on a three-run homer in the first inning and Brittany Lee followed with two long balls of her own Sunday as Texas Tech claimed its first Big 12 Conference series of the season with an 11-3 run-rule of Oklahoma State in the rubber match at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Red Raiders’ (30-15; 3-6) 11 runs marked their most against a conference opponent this year as Tech scored at least one run in each of its four innings. Tech has now won three-straight home series over Oklahoma State (23-18; 3-7) dating back to 2010.
“This was big for our ball club to win the series today,” said Tech head coach Shanon Hays, who became just the third Big 12 coach all-time to record 30 wins in each of his first five seasons with the victory. “We pitched well today and then hit the ball hard as well. Both Gretchen (Aucoin) and Brittany (Lee) came up with big home runs and that’s what you need in Sunday games.”
Lee had previously homered just twice this season before unloading a three-run shot that jump-started a five-run inning for the Red Raiders in the third. She followed with a two-out solo home run an inning later that allowed Tech to end the game via run-rule.
Lee finished 2-for-3 with a season-high four RBI as she and Brooke Scott bolstered the bottom part of the Tech lineup. Scott, making her first start of the season in left field, finished 2-for-2 with a walk for her first career multiple-hit game.
Samantha Camello recorded Tech’s other multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a RBI double in the third that scored leadoff hitter Sydni Emanuel. Sydnie Tapia followed with a RBI single immediately after to score Camello.
It was the second straight multiple hit game for Camello, who wrapped the series hitting .556 on the weekend (5-for-9). Only Aucoin had a higher average for the series after going 4-for-7 (.571 average) with two home runs and five RBI.
Aucoin opened the rout with a key two-out, three-run homer in the opening inning, helping her own cause in the circle with her fourth home run already this season. The left-handed hitter parked a 3-2 offering over the fence in center to score both Emanuel and Camello.
Aucoin (9-7) was also effective in the circle, tossing her team-leading fifth complete game of the season where she allowed three runs, all of which that came in the fourth inning, off six hits and three strikeouts. The victory was her first in the circle during Big 12 play this year.
Tech added two runs in the second off a Simone Freeman wild pitch that scored Lea Hopson and then an illegal pitch from reliever Peyton Walker. Freeman (18-10), making her third start of the weekend, suffered the loss after lasting just 1.2 innings where she allowed five runs off two hits and three walks.
Oklahoma State used a total of four pitchers as Walker lasted only one-third of an inning before Whitney Whitehorn came on to pitch the third and Meagan Lively tossed the fourth. Tech’s 11 runs marked the most allowed by the Cowgirl pitching staff this year.
The Red Raiders will look to build on the series victory this upcoming week when Tech travels for a three-game set at Kansas. The series opens with a 5 p.m. first pitch Thursday evening in Lawrence.
