Last season the Plainsmen turned in a 3-8 overall record, however their (3-2) record in district play earned themselves a spot in the 4A D1 bi-district championship. Their season ended, after losing in the bi-district championship to the Amarillo Sandies. This season, Monterey will be led by first year Head Coach Wayne Hutchinson, who comes to the South Plains from Stamford High School where he won back-to-back 1A Division I state titles the past two seasons. He will have experienced help in his first season as Monterey returns eight players on offense and six players on defense from last year's squad. The offense will be led by All-State Honorable Mention Senior Running Back, Vincent Jackson, as he will look to build off of last season's performance. On defense, they will be led by Defensive Lineman, Alazea Douglas, who will look to turn around the Plainsmen Defense.

"I don't think there's any difference when it comes to x's and o's. coming from a smaller school to a bigger school, once you get on the field you're still teaching the same type of techniques; you're still using the same type of terminology," Head Coach, Wayne Hutchinson said. "the only thing that has changed is you have more kids that you're trying to work in, get them enough reps that you can get good at your system that and what you're trying to teach."

"Coach Hutch has brought a whole new era to us. all of our coaches are different, the way we practice the way we approach it is all different," Monterey Senior, Jared Frankhouser said.

"He's been a really fun guy, i think we have a lot more energy, play with more enthusiasm. We just like to get after it more," Senior Quarterback, Hunter Spaeth said.
