LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior tight end Jace Amaro (San Antonio, Texas) was named to the All-Big 12 Conference first team in a vote by the league coaches while quarterback Baker Mayfield (Austin, Texas) was named the Freshman Offensive Player of the Year, league officials announced earlier today.
Amaro, who was a second team selection as a sophomore in 2012, is the first Red Raider tight end to be named first team all-conference since 1975 (Pat Felux - All-Southwest Conference). Amaro joined Oklahoma's offensive lineman Gabe Ikard as the only unanimous selections on the first team.
Mayfield is the first Red Raider to be named Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year since 2007 when receiver Michael Crabtree was honored. Mayfield is the first true freshman quarterback to win the award since Baylor's Robert Griffin III in 2008.
Amaro led the Big 12 with 98 receptions - the most by a Red Raider since 2007 - while collecting 1,240 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. He had five 100-yard receiving games, including four in a row during Big 12 play, and averaged 103.3 receiving yards per game.

He became the first true freshman walk-on to start at quarterback in a season opener for a BCS program when he passed for 413 yards on 43-of-60 passing with four touchdowns in Tech's opener at SMU.

He has made 25 consecutive starts on the Tech offensive line, a total that leads all active Red Raider offensive players.

Hyder has 60 tackles (43 solo), 11.5 tackles for loss and two sacks with five quarterback hurries on the season.
