Autumn Officially Arrives This Weekend

It may not feel like it outside but Autumn arrives this weekend.
Autumn will officially arrive here on the South Plains this weekend. The Autumnal Equinox will occur on Sunday, September 22 at 3:44 p.m. local time.

The average first freeze for Lubbock usually occurs on or around October 31. The earliest and latest first freeze dates for Lubbock are October 7th (1952) and November 23rd (2003), respectively, according to the National Weather Service.

The Climate Prediction Center notes that severe to extreme drought conditions in place across the South Plains will persist for the next several months. Some climate data indicates we may see a slight improvement in drought conditions across the region but the multi-year drought will continue to persist.
