LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore forward Janine Beckie was officially named today as a candidate for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in collegiate soccer and is presented annually in January at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. The 2013 women’s preseason watch list includes 31 elite players from across the country. Beckie is the only representative from the Big 12 and one of just three underclassmen.
Beckie returns to the aggressive Red Raider frontline following a breakout 2012 rookie campaign in which she netted 14 goals – five of which were game-winners – and helped the Red Raiders advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Her 14 goals in 2012 were third nationally among freshmen.
The Highlands Ranch, Colo. native became the second Texas Tech student-athlete in three years to win Big 12 Rookie of the Year honors, and later became Tech’s first NSCAA All-American in school history.
Beckie enters the 2013 campaign as a Preseason All-Big 12 forward and was tabbed by Top Drawer Soccer earlier this summer as one of the top-10 returning forwards nationally.
Texas Tech opens its 2013 campaign Friday at New Mexico with first kick set for 7 p.m. (CST). The Red Raiders host their home-opener Sunday at 1 p.m. against Colorado State.
