LUBBOCK, Texas – The Black Team took a 2-1 series lead in the annual Texas Tech Baseball Red & Black Series while scoring seven runs on eight hits during its final three trips to the plate during a 10-6 victory over the Red Team on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Five members of the Black squad finished with a multi-hit game, including freshman outfielder Anthony Lyons (2-for-3, 3 runs, RBI) and center fielder Brett Bell (2-for-5, 3B, RBI) who each played a role in the come-from-behind win.
Junior right-handed reliever Nick Pettus (1-0) retired 9-of-10 batters he faced from the fifth to seventh inning while picking up the win allowing just one batter to reach base (double) with three strikeouts.
Junior second baseman Bryant Burleson gave the Red Team a 5-2 lead in the top half of the fourth inning with a solo blast over the left-field wall down the foul line – his second career home run in the Red & Black Series (2011).
Lyons doubled to right field and then scored a batter later when sophomore infielder Alec Humphreys doubled to left field cutting the Red Team’s lead to two runs, 5-3, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Black Team tied the game scoring two runs in the sixth as shortstop Jake Barrios (2-for-4) led off the inning with an infield hit and then stole second base, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the Black Team catcher, Mason Randolph. Lyons reached base with a walk and then scored on junior catcher Hunter Redman’s RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 5-5.
Freshman infielder Ryan Long (2-for-5) laid down a bunt base hit to third base and later scored on a bases-loaded infield hit by Lyons, giving the Black Team a 6-5 lead.
The following inning, Bell tripled into the right-center gap to score Stephen Smith, who reached base on an eight-pitch walk, to provide the eventual game-winning run.
Redshirt-sophomore right-handed pitcher Blake Douglas (0-1) took the loss for the Red Team allowing one run on four hits with two walks.
Humphreys went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and a walk while seven of the nine position players on the Black Team had at least one hit.
