LUBBOCK, Texas – Aubree Piper and Courtney Ensch totaled nine and seven kills each while Rachel Brummitt tallied 14 digs to lead the Black squad to a 3-1 victory Saturday in the annual Red and Black Match held at the United Spirit Arena.
The match was the final preseason scrimmage for the Red Raiders before opening the regular season next weekend at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Weber State.
“I think it was really nice to have the environment of people being around to see what you are doing,” Tech head coach Don Flora said. “There was a lot of good volleyball out there at times (today), and you could tell the fans knew what was going on and enjoyed that.”
In addition to leading the Black team in kills, Piper and Ensch also notched .438 and .357 hitting percentages, combining on just four errors on a total of 30 attempts between the two.
The Black team also benefited from Brummitt’s presence on the back row as she was one of three players in double digits for digs. Emily Ruetter and Marguerite Grubb also totaled 11 and 10 while splitting sets at the setter position.
“I think Piper got it going a little bit,” Flora said. “She’s in her senior year, and it was nice to see her and the setters connect there in the latter two games and put some balls away with a thump and some authority.”
The Red team was led by Breeann David and her match-high 11 kills. Fellow junior Nicole Hragyil chipped in a match-high 17 digs from the setter position as well.
The Red Raiders will face Seattle and UC Riverside in the opening day of the Wildcat Invitational next Friday in Ogden, Utah. Tech closes the tournament the following day against Grand Canyon and Weber State.
