"What is most alarming is it is also nationally the highest mortality rate related to child abuse," said Chris Dougherty, CEO of Covenant Children's Hospital.
He said the purpose of the summit is to enhance the recognition of child abuse, as well as preventing it.
"I believe we will make a meaningful difference in the lives of these precious children and help tp reduce and hopefully alleviate child abuse in the Lubbock area."
Dougherty explained child abuse comes in forms of neglect, physical and sexual abuse.
"You can't deal with a problem with out identifying the problem and with out being able to truly identify the impacts of child abuse," said Dougherty.
If you see signs of child abuse, he said it's important to immediately talk to a medical professional.
"Go to the children's emergency department have experts in being able to identify if this has been child abuse."
