Bases Loaded Walk Gives Tech Softball a 3-2 Win Over Texas State

Kristi Belshe plates game-winning run off a bases-loaded walk Friday evening against Texas State

LUBBOCK, Texas – Kristi Belshe drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh Friday evening to send Texas Tech to a 3-2 walk-off victory over Texas State in the series opener at Rocky Johnson Field.

The victory extended Tech’s home winning streak to 11-straight heading into the second game of the three-game series Saturday afternoon. It is the longest winning streak for the Red Raiders (25-9) since early in the 2011 season.

“We didn’t hit the ball that great tonight but we still found a way to win,” Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. “Texas State has a good ball club and a good pitcher, so we knew we’d have our hands full. Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and swing it a little better and put a few more runs on the board.”

Belshe’s RBI walk capped a wild seventh inning for the Red Raiders as Samantha Camello reached on an error to lead off the frame before Texas State (18-13) starter Ryan House plunked both Brittany Lee and Sydnie Tapia to bring Belshe to the plate with two outs.

It was the first walk-off victory of the season for the Red Raiders, who last won in the bottom of the seventh on April 1, 2012, when Adriana Perez slammed a two-run homer to defeat Iowa State.

Texas State previously tied the game in the top half of the seventh off a Bianca Prado leadoff home run to right center field that was her fourth long ball already this season.

The home run ended any momentum Tech had from the previous inning where the Red Raiders finally got to House with a pair of runs off a two-out RBI double from Cassie McClure that was followed by a RBI single from Gretchen Aucoin.

House (15-8) entered the sixth having retired 10 of the 11 batters she faced in the second through fifth innings, allowing only a two-out walk to Aucoin in the fourth during that span.

House suffered the loss in a complete-game effort, giving up two earned runs off five hits and two walks while striking out five as well.

Brittany Talley (9-1) picked up her team-leading ninth win of the season in relief as she tossed the final two innings, allowing just one run off two hits while striking out two.

The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead midway through the game off a RBI single back to the circle from Courtney Harris, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Harris’ line-drive went off Aucoin’s glove and bounced towards the bag at second, allowing her to reach safely while Jordan Masek scampered home.

McClure almost gave Tech its first run of the game in the fourth but her long fly ball to left field was caught by a leaping catch from Timishia North at the wall.

The two teams will continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon in a 4 p.m. first pitch at Rocky Johnson Field.
