Behind Enemy Lines: West Virginia

Dana Holgerson is on the hot seat entering his fourth season at the helm of West Virginia football. After year two in the Big 12 conference, the Mountaineers finished in a 3-way tie for last place in the conference. The program missed out on a bowl appearance for the first time in 11 years.

Last season, the Red Raiders trailed the ‘Neers, 27-16 in the 3rd quarter, before Tech came stomping back to a 10-point victory to remain unbeaten.

Life after Geno Smith left Holgerson with a carousel of quarterbacks in 2013. Between Clint Trickett and Paul Millard, expect Trickett to emerge as the headliner for the 2014 season. The signal caller is just one of six returning offensive starters with seven returners across the line of scrimmage.

The Mountaineers strength seems to lie in the back field with Andrew Buie returning after a redshirt season. Behind him are four potentially explosive backs including Dreamius Smith and Wendell Smallwood.

Newly promoted defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has his hands full trying to turn around a defense that finished 101st in total defense. The Red Raiders welcome the Mountaineers on Oct. 11th at Jones AT&T Stadium.
