LUBBOCK, TX—The Speak Your Mind Texas campaign stopped in Lubbock on Thursday to start the conversation about mental health “before it’s too late.” Parents, members of the community and experts in the field discussed how Lubbock can improve as a community to support children with mental illnesses.
According to the Department of State Health Services, “One in every five people in the United States has a mental illness, and about 20 percent of those will be severe.”
“Often times these conversations are started after the fact of the tremendous violence and the tragedies we've seen across the nation,” Cathy Pope, CEO of StarCare Specialty Health System said. “The point here is to start those conversations before we have those tragedies in Lubbock.”
Pope also said that she hopes that starting this discussion will get rid of the stigma in West Texas about mental illness.
“West Texas mentality of pull yourself up by your boot strap doesn’t work very well when you have a mental illness,” Pope said.
