LUBBOCK, TX - On Friday police released the name of the driver who is accused of critically wounding a child when he "intentionally" accelerated his truck into four vehicles. Nicholas Zane Melton was held in the Lubbock County Detention Center on five charges of aggravated assault.
The crash happened shortly before 10:00 Thursday night at the Walmart on 82nd Street & Milwaukee Avenue. Witnesses said a driver plowed through the parking lot, hitting several vehicles. The driver then went onto 82nd Street and hit another vehicle, before he crashed into a tree.
Witnesses told us he got out of his truck and started to walk away. He told the witnesses he and his wife had just separated. Before he could walk off too far police found and arrested Melton.
Police said a 6-year-old child was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
On May 22, 2014 at 9:30 pm after an argument in the parking lot of 6315 82nd Street, Wal‐Mart; Nicholas Melton drove north across the parking lot intentionally accelerating. Melton continued accelerating north in his white 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 one ton dually pickup as he hit the storm water drain at the north end of the Wal‐Mart store parking lot. Melton continued the acceleration striking three vehicles that were in the fuel area of Murphy’s.
Melton did not stop but continued to accelerate north bound across the grassy area onto 82nd Street striking a forth vehicle. After striking the forth vehicle Melton drove his one ton Dodge pickup into the parking lot of Betenbough Homes where he exited the truck and began to walk away from the scene until arriving officers placed him in custody.
One of the four victims transported to University Medical center by EMS is a six year old child who remains in critical condition with life threatening injuries. The other three people transported by EMS have been released. Of the five victims involved, four are children ages 9, 7, 6, and 12. The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
