DPS Said Four Died When Car Smashed Into 18-Wheeler

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Thursday released the names of four people killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon 37 miles south of Fort Stockton along U.S. Highway 285.
FORT STOCKTON, TX -- The Texas Department of Public Safety on Thursday released the names of four people killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon 37 miles south of Fort Stockton along U.S. Highway 285.

DPS said the driver, Gilberto Gonzalez, 21, and passengers, Selene Verenise Leal, 19, Martin Guardiola, Jr., 18, and Gilberto Gonzalez, Jr., 10 months, died in the crash. All four were from Roma.

DPS said Gilberto Gonzalez was driving a passenger car and for whatever reason it crossed into the path of oncoming traffic and hit an 18-wheeler. The conditions were dry and clear. DPS did not disclose a specific reason that the car might have crossed into oncoming traffic.

DPS said two of the crash victims were wearing seat belts and the other two were not. The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to a hospital but DPS did not specify the extent of his injuries in its official accident summary.
