LUBBOCK, Texas – There will be a pair of Texas Tech baseball players joining the New York Yankees organization as senior left-handed pitcher Jonny Drozd (Lake Dallas, Texas) signed a free agent contract with the organization Friday.
Yesterday, Red Raider teammate senior Adam Kirsch inked a deal with the Yankees as a free agent. Like Kirsch, Drozd will report Monday to Tampa, Fla., the site of the Yankees Class-A Advanced organization, the Tampa Yankees.
Drozd went 7-1 this season with a 2.09 ERA while leading the team with 28 appearances (all relief) and five saves. He tallied 73.1 innings with 48 strikeouts and only 15 walks allowed while opponents batted .235 this season. Since 1971, Drozd’s 2.09 ERA marked the fifth best by a Red Raider in a single-season.
Drozd capped off his collegiate career with an 11-6 record and a 2.75 ERA, which ranks sixth all-time at Texas Tech and is the fourth best by a Red Raider during the aluminum bat era (since 1974).
Drozd also finished his career pitching 92.2 consecutive innings without allowing a home run – dating back to last season.
He made a team-leading six appearances in the NCAA Tournament with a 1-1 record, 1.74 ERA, two saves, 10.1 innings pitched and with four strikeouts and no walks while opponents batted .205.
Overall, Drozd is the sixth Red Raider to be drafted/sign free agent following this month’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
