LUBBOCK -- South Plains elementary and middle school students will be kicking off National Robotics Week on Saturday by building and programming LEGO robots as a part of the Get Excited About Robotics (GEAR) competition.

With the help of Texas Tech University engineering students, student teams will design, build and program robots to perform specific tasks. The competition will also include a challenge to learn engineering skills through a teaming exercise in designing, building, programming, testing and troubleshooting wheeled LEGO robots.

The competition began in 2006 and has grown to an event including 150 participating teams and more than 50 schools across the South Plains.

The competition will start at 9:00 am at the Texas Tech Rec Center.
