LUBBOCK, TX -- A Lubbock County family in the 7600 block of West Erskine Street lost their home, two cats and most of their earthly possessions in a fire early Sunday morning in the 7600 block of West Erskine Street.

Volunteer firefighters with West Carlisle and Shallowater responded at 5:41 am and had the fire out within 20 minutes.  Firefighters said the fire itself was confined to the kitchen and the living room, but the entire home was smoke damaged.

The South Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross provided the family with temporary shelter.

The family said two adults and four children between the ages of 9 and 16 got out safely, but two cats did not.  The dad woke up just before the fire, smelled something strange but could not find anything wrong.  So, he went back to bed.  A few minutes later the family had to evacuate.

The family said a fund will be set up Monday at Lubbock National Bank in the name of Debra Lovell for April Modesto.  Once the fund is set up donations can be accepted at any LNB branch.
