Girl Found Safe, Suspect in Custody After Amber Alert

The girl who was reported as abducted from Nacogdoches County has been found safe by Lubbock Police.
LUBBOCK, TX -- Just after 5:15 pm Wednesday Lubbock Police said they found Nomei Velazquez, 15, safe and took Juan Fabian Arenas Delacruz, 28, into custody. Police thanked Lubbock residents who called in to provide tips to help locate the girl.

An Amber Alert said Velazquez was taken from Nacogdoches County and was thought to be in grave danger.

That same Amber Alert said, “The suspect was last seen in the city of Lubbock.”

Just after 3:00 pm police set up a perimeter at a construction site near Covenant Medical Center so that no one could come or go undetected. A car matching the suspect’s vehicle - a Volkswagen Passat - had been located at the construction site.

Lubbock Police said it was an off-duty LPD officer who spotted the Passat in the lot, and sat in his personal vehicle watching the car, and called it in to police to get a perimeter set up. Then that off-duty officer changed into uniform to come back and assist in the search.

According to LPD, this was a search that involved multiple agencies and came together very quickly.

The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office said they were notified Tuesday evening by the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office that Velazquez’ cell phone was pinged from the area of 19th and University Avenue with a radius of 3,000 meters – which is less than two miles.
