Hundreds of residents in the Guadalupe neighborhood in northeast Lubbock were forced from their homes early Thursday morning in response to a hazmat leak.
Hazmat crews with the Lubbock Fire Department were called to the Bayer Crop Sciences plant on Erskine near I-27 around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
When crews arrived on scene, they found hydrochloric acid leaking from a trailer.
Thousands of gallons of the dangerous acid had leaked from the tank by 2:00 a.m. Thursday.
The leak prompted emergency crews to evacuate residents in part of the Guadalupe neighborhood out of fear vapors from the dangerous chemical would float in a cloud over their homes.
