Texas Tech Press Release:
LUBBOCK, Texas –
Texas Tech had its second player taken in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when junior catcher Hunter Redman (Midland, Texas) was selected in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers (249th overall) on Friday afternoon.

Redman joins teammate left-handed pitcher Chris Sadberry as Red Raiders who heard their names called in the draft the day before Texas Tech takes on College of Charleston in the program’s first-ever NCAA Super Regional.

Redman becomes Tech’s highest drafted catcher since 2006 when Tyler Reves was drafted in the fourth round (135th overall) of the draft by the Chicago White Sox.

Redman – an All-Big 12 second team pick – batted .328 during Big 12 play with 13 RBI. Redman is the first Tech catcher to receive All-Big 12 during his first season at Tech since Willie Durazo in 2002 (2nd Team).

Redman was clutch all season in Big 12 series finales batting .367 (11-for-30) with two doubles and nine RBI in eight series finales.

Texas Tech has now had five catchers drafted over the last eight years with three of the five going in the top 15 rounds. It also marks the 11th time in school history that a pair of Red Raiders were selected in the top-10 rounds – and first time since 2012.

Just two years ago, Redman’s brother, Reid a third baseman at Tech, was drafted in the 23rd round following his senior season by the Tampa Bay Rays. Reid was also drafted in 2011 in the 37th round by the Dodgers. Reid is currently pitching in the Miami Marlins organization and has reached Double-A this season.

Texas Tech had one signee selected through seven rounds of the draft with left-handed pitcher Tanner Scott (Howard College) taken in the sixth round (181st overall) by the Baltimore Orioles.
