Illegal Net Full of Dead Sharks Discovered In Gulf of Mexico

On Monday the US Coast Guard crews found the carcasses of 65 sharks in a mile long gill net 20 miles off the coast of South Padre Island.
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX -- On Monday the US Coast Guard crews found the carcasses of 65 sharks in a mile long gill net 20 miles off the coast of South Padre Island.

The gill net the sharks were caught in is illegal in Texas and has been called a “wall of death” by a Coast Guard official due to its efficiency in catching and killing fish.

The Coast Guard believes the net was left behind by Mexican fisherman illegally poaching in US waters.

The Coast Guard says it has seized 28 fishing vessels, sent 34 back into Mexican waters and retrieved more than 12 nautical miles of illegal fishing gear since October 2013.
